Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Machine: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the newest and perhaps the most versatile medical imaging technology available where Doctors can get highly refined images of the body’s interior even without a surgery or a cut mark using the MRI machine. By using strong magnets and pulses of radio waves to manipulate the natural magnetic properties in the body, this technique makes better images of organs and soft tissues then those of other scanning technologies. MRI is particularly useful for imaging the brain and spine but in addition the soft tissue joints and interior structure of the bones and other areas can also be visualized to the approximation. The entire body is visible to the technique, which poses more or less no known health risks. The first MRI machine of not only India but also the first in Asia was installed in the INMAS, New Delhi on 25th November 1985.
Our hospital got the first machine installed and introduced in the State of Meghalaya for the first time in the year 2001 for the service of the people, prior to which peoples have to rush to Guwahati the nearest centre to get done a simple MRI scan of the Brain, which not only increased the cost of the treatment but at points even becomes unbearable by them. By availing the facility here in the heart of the city itself not only the cost came down but they started getting a faster speedier service and also the treatment at the correct time may be in the form of referral or even getting rid of the problems by other therapies. A MRI scan in present day health scenario is the ultimate for a doctor to diagnose the patient not only correctly but to the extreme possible accuracy.
The machine firstly installed was a 0.2 Tiesla which is now being upgraded to a 1.5 Tiesla machine where for the first time a Whole body scan along with Spectroscopy study, MRCP study, etc. in addition to the other normal and routine scan would be possible and comparing with the old one will consume less time in completing a scan. A MRI Brain scan will take as less as 10 to 12 minutes to get completed which will not only reduce the anxiety of the patients and his / her relatives to now the result earlier but will also give them the finest result in its way and will save the patient from lying down for a longer period of time to get the scan completed. The model being installed is the latest model of Wipro GE being the only installation in the entire North East and the only third installation in all over India as of today and with its all unique features, the model was used recently concluded Beizing Olympics for its advanced features.
The Signa 1.5T HDe MRI system is unique for its features and applications like:

  • Uniform Magnetic Field & advanced clinical applications.
  • Faster Acquisition with minimum scan time.
  • T2, Flair & DWI Propeller.
  • Brain Perfusion (Stroke Evaluation) FGRE Perfusion.
  • The 8 Channel NV Array and 13 elements versatile Neurovascular Coil enables combined head and neck imaging without even the need for patient repositioning.
  • Single and Multivoxel MR Spectroscopy.
  • IAC and Cranial Nerve Imaging FIESTA – C.
  • Free Breathing Abdomen Imaging 2D FIESTA.
  • 3D MRCP, Dual Echo Imaging for Abdomen are the few advanced applications to name in the Signa.
  • Triphasic 3D Liver Imaging in Axial and Coronal Plane with Multiphasic Vascular Imaging, AVM, Fistula tricks.
  • Whole Body Imaging with Rapid Assessment of disease without ionizing radiation.
  • Peripheral Angiograms and Musculoskeletal studies.
  • For uncooperative patients, the HD is capable of performing a normal scan with less time.
CT Scan: The last part of 20th century saw major revolutions in the Indian technological market producing faster, accurate and cost effective products. The CT scan machine was first introduced in the city in the year 1994 for the people of Meghalaya and as the demand of the time, quest for faster technology kept on growing Dr. W. Kharshiing also tried to kept up with the speed by introducing newer and faster technologies for the peoples. The CT scan machine introduced in the year 1994 was replaced by a double slice in the year 2001.

DIGITAL X-RAY: The older technology of drying a film of X-Ray in the dark room after the exposure and then getting it ready for the Radiologist to report it which they might find not very clear for reporting and then they end up reporting repeat the X-Ray increasing not the problem for the technician but also for the people the most effected & more troubled who had to turn for another session of exposure to the radiation. The session was also brought to an end by introducing the Digital fully Coumputerised X-Ray which allows not only a faster reporting but also a very clearer picture for the doctors & patients and in emergency cases the doctors even can use it just by looking at the computer for simple & major fractures also or even other major problems.
